Enhancing Clay-Based 3D-Printed Mortars with Polymeric Mesh Reinforcement Techniques

This study explores the use of 3D-printed polymeric meshes to reinforce clay-based mortars produced by additive manufacturing technologies. The aim is to improve the mechanical performance of 3D-printed construction materials, particularly by strengthening the connection between printed layers.

Meshes made from PLA, ABS and PETG were integrated into the clay-based mortar during the printing process to act as reinforcement between layers. Their effect on the structural behaviour of the printed specimens was then evaluated.

The results demonstrate that the integration of polymeric meshes can increase the flexural strength of 3D-printed clay-based materials, helping to overcome some of the mechanical limitations associated with additive manufacturing. The research supports the development of stronger and more sustainable construction materials combining low-impact clay-based mortars with advanced 3D printing techniques.
