CircSyst Project Kicks Off to Drive Circular Economy Across Europe
The CircSyst project, a groundbreaking initiative funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme, officially kicked off in Valencia (Spain) last June.
Bringing together a consortium of 32 public and private entities from nine countries, including Spain, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Sweden, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary and the United Kingdom, CircSyst aims to establish large-scale pilot systems that implement and promote circular business models. These models are designed to be widely replicated across Europe, accelerating the transition towards a sustainable and circular economy.
The project, set to run for 36 months, focuses on nine demonstrators spread across Europe, each working on innovative solutions in three key areas: Water Management, Biowaste, and Plastics and Packaging.
The regions participating in this ambitious endeavour include Castilla la Mancha (Spain), Flanders (Belgium), Podravje (Slovenia), Visby (Sweden), Paijat-Hame-Lahti (Finland), Castilla la Mancha (Spain), Valencian Community (Spain), Thessaloniki (Greece), and East and Central Hungary.
CircSyst is aligned with the European Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI), which aims to foster circular economy practices across Europe. While many regions are already engaged in activities to enhance their economic circularity, significant gaps in knowledge, information, skills, and awareness still exist. The European Commission highlighted these challenges in 2024, noting the need for targeted solutions to bridge these gaps. CircSyst directly addresses these challenges by developing and implementing innovative solutions tailored to the specific needs of its demonstrator regions. The project aims to enhance industrial symbiosis—where raw materials from one industrial process are reused in another—thereby fostering cross-sectoral and cross-border collaboration and replication.
At the project’s first meeting in Spain, leading partners presented their work packages, outlining their roles and responsibilities. This gathering was not just a formal introduction but a key opportunity for all consortium partners to connect, collaborate, and align their efforts. The meeting set the stage for a coordinated approach to achieving CircSyst’s ambitious goals.
As we embark on this exciting journey, we are eager to contribute to the wider efforts of driving a sustainable circular economy across Europe. The work ahead is both challenging and inspiring, and we look forward to making a lasting impact that will resonate across the continent and far beyond the project’s duration.
