CircSyst in the Spotlight at Lisbon Sustainability Conference

Between 24th and 26th June 2025 Camilla Chlebna and Stefan Philipp attended the 16th International Sustainability Conference in Lisbon, Portugal. This is the leading international meeting of sustainability transitions researchers from a wide range of different disciplines. It covers a broad range of topics from the role of community organisations, research security and sustainability, the question of the discontinuation of unsustainable practices, and also includes alternative approaches such as arts-based research on sustainability issues.  Both presented ongoing work and Camilla Chlebna also co-organised a special track on the Geography of Sustainability Transitions. Within this track Camilla presented a conceptual contribution that seeks to add nuance to the debate on regional path development by putting a greater emphasis on the path dependency of technologies, institutions and practices. The theoretical framework is illustrated by the plastic packaging cases in CircSyst, showing that all feature clusters that the respective region would prefer to keep in place whilst shifting to more sustainable solutions. The presentation arose much interest and gathered constructive feedback, which will help further develop the key ideas.
