CCRI

The Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) is an initiative launched by the European Commission as part of the Circular Economy Action Plan 2020. Its main objective is to support the timely achievement of the 2050 climate neutrality target set in the EU Green Deal by driving the implementation of circular economy practices in cities and regions across Europe. More specifically, the CCRI supports the design and implementation of Circular Systemic Solutions across Europe’s cities and regions, providing close collaboration and guidance to projects.

Within the CCRI, three types of stakeholders work closely together:

  • Pilots: 12 pioneering cities, regions, or clusters leading the way in circular practices.
  • Fellows: 25 cities and regions eager to deepen their circular transition and learn from Pilots.
  • Projects: EU-funded research and innovation projects, like CircSyst, that provide expertise and tools to put systemic solutions into practice.

As a CCRI Project, CircSyst applies and expands the CCRI methodology (Mapping, Designing, Implementing) across key value chains: water, biowaste, plastics and packaging. Many of our demonstration regions are also part of the CCRI umbrella as Pilots or Fellows, which strengthens collaboration and ensures that solutions are both innovative and grounded in local needs.

You can explore the interactive map to see where our demonstrator sites are located, what they are working on, and whether they are CCRI Pilots or Fellows!
