Mechanical Properties of Bio-Printed Mortars with Bio-Additives for Green and Sustainable Construction
The study investigates the use of eco-friendly, cement-free mortars for 3D printing, with a particular focus on sustainable construction and conservation applications. The developed mixtures are based on hydrated lime, natural pozzolan and river sand, with different proportions of pine and cypress wood shavings added as natural and sustainable additives.
The main objective is to demonstrate that these bio-based mortars can be successfully 3D printed using Liquid Deposition Modeling (LDM) technology, while maintaining suitable physical and mechanical properties. The results show that low percentages of wood additives have only a limited impact on mortar performance, while higher concentrations progressively reduce mechanical strength and other properties. Compared with conventionally moulded samples, the 3D-printed specimens showed slightly lower mechanical strength and higher porosity, mainly due to insufficient compaction during the printing process.
Overall, the research demonstrates the potential of low-emission, bio-based mortars as a sustainable alternative for 3D-printed construction applications, contributing to more resource-efficient building practices and supporting the objectives of the European Green Deal.
