First Issue of the CircSyst Newsletter

Dear Partners and Stakeholders,

We are excited to welcome you to the first edition of the CircSyst newsletter!

As we embark on this 36-month journey, we aim to provide you with regular updates on our progress and the exciting developments within the project. CircSyst brings together 32 partners from nine European countries, with the shared goal of advancing circular economy practices through large-scale pilot systems in Water Management, Biowaste, and Plastics and Packaging. This initiative is aligned with the Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI), and we are committed to bridging knowledge gaps and fostering cross-sector collaboration to accelerate the transition to a sustainable circular economy.

In this inaugural issue, you’ll find articles covering initial achievements and activities since the project’s launch, including the successful kick-off event in Valencia (Spain), the attendance to an international water management event, the launch of the Hungarian demonstrator, CircSyst’s participation in circular economy events, and the first General Assembly in Thessaloniki (Greece).

Here you will find news about the project's first months!

New insights after attending Water Reuse Europe Conference and Exhibition - Let’s act now, it is so complex when water scarcity gets severe

Author: Lina Lindahl, Researcher

Lina Lindahl from RISE, working with CircSyst Demonstrator 4, attended the Water Reuse Europe Third Conference and Exhibition on Innovation in Water Reuse in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France. The event highlighted cutting-edge solutions in water reuse for agriculture, industry, and potable applications, with key presentations from the French Scientific and Technical Association for Water and Environment (ASTEE) and a technical tour of the JOURDAIN demonstrator. The conference reinforced the need for proactive water management and provided valuable insights into microbial risk prevention and guidelines that will inform CircSyst’s ongoing work on sustainable water reuse.

CircSyst participates in key Circular Economy events

Author: Cristina Sanz Rutherford, Project and Stakeholder Engagement Officer

CircSyst has actively engaged in key circular economy events, showcasing its commitment to advancing sustainable practices. In October 2024, the project was presented at an event focused on circular innovation in the plastics sector. In November, CircSyst participated in the 3rd CCRI Coordination and Support Workshop, contributing to discussions on scaling circular solutions and turning them into investment opportunities. These engagements reinforce CircSyst’s role in driving collaborative systemic change across Europe, fostering innovation, and strengthening its network under the CCRI umbrella.

First General Assembly in Greece

Author: Cristina Sanz Rutherford, Project and Stakeholder Engagement Officer

The CircSyst project held its first General Assembly on 6-7 November 2024 in Thessaloniki, Greece, hosted by CERTH. Partners reviewed progress, shared updates on technical and transversal Work Packages, and explored synergies for advancing project outcomes. A highlight of the meeting was the visit to Demonstrator 8, an innovative pilot tackling plastic food waste through advanced recycling and 3D printing technologies. By engaging consumers in co-creation and promoting circular practices, this pilot exemplifies the project’s mission to drive sustainability and community involvement. The consortium left energised to continue its impactful work.
